Yes — India can still win the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, but after today’s Round 6 loss to Uzbekistan, the title race has become much more complicated.
India’s position now-21 Sep 2026
India entered Round 6 with a perfect 10/10 match points, after five consecutive match victories. They were second on tiebreak behind Uzbekistan.
In Round 6, however:
Uzbekistan 🇺🇿 2.5 – 1.5 India
So India has suffered its first match loss of the Olympiad.
The important thing is that there are still five rounds remaining after the September 22 rest day. The Olympiad has 11 rounds in total.
India's lineup is extremely strong:

Gukesh and Nihal have been particularly important for India's early results.
The big factor: match points
The Olympiad is decided by match points, not simply the number of individual board wins. A match win gives 2 points, a draw 1, and a loss 0.
Therefore, India needs to:
1. Win the remaining matches
2. Avoid another match loss
3. Hope Uzbekistan and Germany drop points
4. Keep the board-score/tiebreak situation strong
The five remaining rounds are therefore extremely important.
🇮🇳 vs 🇺🇿 is not necessarily the end of India's title hopes
The Uzbekistan match was arguably the biggest clash of the tournament so far. Uzbekistan is playing at home and has a formidable lineup including Javokhir Sindarov, Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Nodirbek Yakubboev. India has Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Arjun and Nihal.
So today's result gives Uzbekistan an important advantage, but one match loss does not mathematically eliminate India.
And remember: in 2024, India won the Olympiad after putting together a spectacular second half. India is also the defending Open champion in Samarkand.
What to watch after the rest day
The fascinating part is that India, Uzbekistan and Germany were the only teams on 10/10 after Round 5, so this is still a very tight championship race.
Bottom line: India has lost its perfect record, but India's gold-medal campaign is absolutely still alive. The next five rounds will determine whether they can recover from the Uzbekistan defeat and remain in the fight.
